Solar Incentives & Grants

UK Solar Panel Grants, Support & Incentives

From VAT relief to export payments — there are more ways than ever to make solar affordable. Discover what you could be entitled to.

UK-Wide Solar Incentives

Regardless of where you live in the UK, these government-backed schemes are available to all eligible homeowners.

0% VAT Until 2027

All domestic solar panel installations in England, Scotland, and Wales are exempt from VAT until 31 March 2027 — saving you hundreds of pounds upfront.

Smart Export Guarantee (SEG)

Get paid for every unit of surplus electricity you send back to the grid. Rates range from 1.5p to over 30p per kWh depending on your provider and tariff.

Solar Together Schemes

Some councils run group-buying schemes that negotiate bulk discounts with local installers, reducing installation costs for participating homeowners.

Regional Support & Grants

In addition to UK-wide schemes, there are targeted grants and loans available depending on where you live. A trusted local installer can confirm what you're eligible for.

England — ECO4 Scheme

Fully funded solar panels for low-income households who meet eligibility criteria (certain benefits + low EPC rating).

England — LA Flex

Some councils extend ECO4 eligibility to households that don't meet standard criteria. Check with your local authority.

Scotland — Interest-Free Loans

Scottish homeowners can access interest-free loans for solar installations, often bundled with wider home energy improvements.

Wales — Nest Scheme

Provides free solar panels and energy improvements for eligible low-income households in Wales.

Northern Ireland — NISEP

The NI Sustainable Energy Programme (NISEP) may provide support for eligible households. Note: SEG does not apply in Northern Ireland.

Wales — ECO4 & ORP

The Optimised Retrofit Programme also supports solar installations for social housing across Wales.

Who Qualifies for Free Solar Panels?

Fully funded solar panels are generally reserved for low-income households. You may qualify if you receive means-tested benefits AND live in a home with a low energy efficiency (EPC) rating.

  • Universal Credit, Income Support, Pension Credit or similar qualifying benefits
  • Property with an EPC rating of D, E, F, or G
  • Available through ECO4 in England and Scotland, and the Nest Scheme in Wales
  • Most homeowners won't qualify for free panels but still benefit from 0% VAT and SEG payments
