Smart Export Guarantee

Get Paid Up To £630/Year for Your Solar Energy

The Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) pays you for every unit of surplus solar electricity you export back to the national grid. Don't let your excess energy go to waste.

What Is the Smart Export Guarantee?

The SEG is a UK government-backed scheme launched in 2020 that pays homeowners, businesses, and farms for the excess electricity their solar panels generate and feed back into the grid.

A typical home uses around 50% of the energy it generates — the other half is exported. With the SEG, that exported energy earns you money rather than being given away for free.

Earn From Excess Energy

Every kWh you export earns you money — payments are made quarterly by your chosen SEG supplier.

Up to £630+ Per Year

Combined with bill savings, the SEG significantly shortens your payback period to as little as 6-10 years.

Government-Backed Scheme

Introduced under the Energy Act 2013, the SEG is a legal requirement for large energy suppliers to offer.

Quarterly Payments

SEG payments are typically made quarterly — a reliable stream of income on top of your bill savings.

How Much Can You Earn?

Earnings depend on your system size, usage habits, and the tariff you choose. Based on a standard 4kW system exporting around 1,800–2,100 kWh per year:

Tariff TypeSEG RateEst. Annual Payment
Low-end tariffs1.5 – 4p/kWh£25 – £80
Mid-range tariffs5 – 7p/kWh£90 – £130
High-end fixed-rate12 – 16p/kWh£200 – £270
Premium time-of-use (with battery)20 – 30p/kWh£360 – £630+

Based on a 4kW solar PV system. Actual earnings depend on export volume, tariff, and energy usage.

How to Register for SEG Payments

1

Get MCS Certified Installation

Your solar panels must be installed by an MCS-certified installer. Paid For Solar connects you with certified local installers.

2

Get a Smart Meter

A smart meter is required to accurately measure your electricity exports. Most energy suppliers offer free installation.

3

Choose an SEG Supplier

Compare tariffs from Ofgem-listed SEG suppliers. You don't have to use your existing energy provider.

4

Apply & Provide Evidence

Submit your MCS certificate and smart meter details to your chosen SEG supplier to open your export account.

5

Start Earning

Once your account is active (typically 2–4 weeks), you'll start earning quarterly payments for your exported energy.

Maximise Your SEG Earnings

Choose a Higher Tariff

Shop around — SEG rates vary significantly. Switching to a better tariff can increase annual payments by hundreds of pounds.

Add Battery Storage

Battery storage lets you access premium time-of-use tariffs of 20–30p/kWh, dramatically increasing what you earn.

Use Energy Smartly

Run high-energy appliances (dishwasher, washing machine) during peak solar generation to maximise self-consumption.

Different SEG Suppliers

You can use a different supplier for SEG exports than for your electricity. This gives you complete freedom to find the best deal.

Review Annually

SEG tariffs change. Reviewing your agreement annually ensures you're always on the most competitive rate available.

Seek Expert Advice

Our partner installers can advise on the best SEG setup for your system, including battery pairing for premium tariffs.
